Every Tuesday, a group of 2nd & 3rd grade students with a handful of 8th grade students come together and participate in the Whitney Point, Promise Zone, after school program. The program is an extended learning opportunity to promote, academic success, healthier living, community connections through character education and hands on learning.
This marking period the students met a new friend; Miss Ann. Ann is a Nutrition Educator, from Cornell Cooperative Extension, who has been conducting cooking lessons with our students. The kids have been able to make things like peanut butter banana quesadillas, pumpkin pies, and fruit pizzas! On top of enjoying the snacks, the kids have learned about how to read a nutrition label, how much sugar is in different every day beverages and the proper way to use a knife. Cornell Cooperative Extension also invited our afterschool families of the students to their Thanksgiving Harvest, during their weekend farmer's market. Lastly, all families were provided supplies for a free Thanksgiving meal.
